Open Call for 30 Performers
The Student is a large-scale, community-inclusive performance piece that will premiere April 3 and 4, 2014 at The O'Shaughnessy as part of the Women of Substance series on the campus of St. Catherine's University, St. Paul.
Choreographer/director Vanessa Voskuil collaborates with award winning composer Janika Vandervelde and sound artist Jesse Whitney of A. Wolf & Her Claws in this epic movement, visual, and music theater performance piece about learning, knowing and being. Voskuil brings together choirs, community members, and movement artists in this physical, emotional, and psychological exploration of human experience.
Who can participate?
The veteran and first time performer are welcome. Participants do not need to have any formal arts background to participate, but those participating should be comfortable with being seen on stage in front of an audience. Participants consider themselves a student and are willing to say “yes” to a movement-based creative process and interact with a diverse community of people. Participants have access to email and are age diverse (18+) with ability to stand, sit, and walk. I’m interested in a variety of movement aesthetics and forms contributing to this work and invite people from all backgrounds to participate, e.g., performance, martial arts, athletics, social dance, etc.
Rehearsals will be conducted in a workshop format providing tools/training for performing the work, generating choreography, and offering opportunities for dynamic participation in the creation of individualized movements. Participants have opportunities to be involved in three scenes in the context of a 2-hour piece. Participants will learn the details of these scenes at either the Pre-rehearsal Social (see below) and/or at the first rehearsal. Then, they can choose which scenes they would like to participate in, if not all.
What is the time commitment?

How do I sign up to participate?
Due to the incredible response, I have closed the participant sign up, however, the creative process and casting of this performance is very fluid and I may find that I can make way for more interest. Instead, I welcome you to fill out the waiting list form here.
Thank you! I will be in touch.
