About the work

"The Master - a piece that manifests itself from thin air" is a sister piece to my epic dance and theater work “The Student,” which premiered this spring as part of the Women of Substance Series at The O’Shaughnessy on the campus of St. Catherine University, St. "The Master" originated out of the themes of “The Student,” which surpassed any expectations of an hour-long work. It grew to an epic size of 170 performers and lasted for over 2 hours. Least to say, it brought about many themes to play with that I feel didn’t really get addressed in the depth that I would have liked. It realized itself on a surface level for me in some moments. “The Master” finds a moment in time that “The Student” could not provide for me, and I will be creating this work based off of those ideas that came about during that rehearsal process.

Finding itself inside the depths of “The Student,” “The Master” embodies a reality theater experience. The work takes the stance that we are on this earth to master ourselves, and we can only partake in our lives as much as we are aware of it. The action generates a plot of desire and plain passiveness in our lives and how we manage to pull ourselves out of the abyss and clean up the mess that is of our own making. Culminating into a theater fantasy, “The Master” is about manifested drama on a personal and theatrical level.
